A scenario-based assessment

All three levels of CLES are organized around a scenario for each level (the theme of the scenario is predetermined according to the level chosen).

All tasks to be completed are connected and information understood and gathered in the Listening and Reading parts of the test has to be used in the Speaking and Writing parts.

The CLES 1 test (total duration: 2h)

The CLES 1 scenario is defined as the simulation of a realistic situation that candidates may experience while studying and living in a foreign country.

The scenario-based test is organized as follows:

1. Listening: 30 minutes

◊ 2 documents (video and/or audio), total cumulated duration: 5 minutes.

◊ 3 listenings/viewings for each document

2. Reading: 30 minutes

◊ 3 to 4 texts, total cumulated length: 5 pages.

3. Writing: 45 minutes

◊ Writing a letter or an email (150 – 200 words).

4. Speaking: 15 minutes

◊ Recording two 2-minute-long messages on an answering machine/a voicemail.

The CLES 2 test (total duration: 3h)

The CLES 2 scenario is defined as the simulation of a realistic situation in which candidates will have to complete a specific mission based on documents about a general theme presented in the form of a problem-solving scenario. The information provided in the documents will be used to negotiate and interact with other candidates about the given problem, thus enabling candidates to complete a common task.

The scenario-based test is organized as follows:

1. Listening: 30 minutes

◊ 2 documents (video and/or audio), total cumulated duration: 5 minutes.

◊ 3 listenings/viewings for each document.

2. Reading and Wrting: 2h15

◊ 5 pages of text to read.

◊ Writing a synthetic report from the different elements gathered in the documents (250 to 300 words).

3. Interacting: 10 minutes

◊ Candidates are assessed in pairs in this part of the test: each candidate is expected to play a specific role which will lead him/her to negotiate with another candidate and to finally reach a compromise suitable for both parties.

The CLES 3 test (total duration: 4h20)

The CLES 3 scenario aims to evaluate the candidate’s ability to communicate and take part in the scientific events related to his/her specialist field and/or research field. The themes and documents are chosen in collaboration with professionals working in the field.

The scenario-based test is organized as follows:

1. 1. Getting familiar with the documents (Reading and Listening), taking notes and preparing visual aids (3 hours)

◊ 7 to 8 pages of authentic text material from different source types.

◊ 1 or several audiovisual documents (total cumulated duration: 10 minutes)

2. Speaking: 10 minutes

◊ Using the visual aids and notes that they have prepared in the previous part of the test, candidates have to give an oral presentation about the theme of the documents.

3. Interacting: 10 minutes

◊ Candidates then have to interact with the jury and answer the questions they may be asked.

4. Writing: 1h

◊ Candidates have to write a structured report about the issues dealt with in the documents (taking into account the points made by the jury during the discussion). It can take the form of an article, an abstract etc. and should be approximately 600 words long.
